Corporate Problem Solving - Essay Example Can anything be done about the wide variety and large amount of information that comes to many corporate planners on a daily basis' Most corporate planners get so much information that they can hardly manage their workloads. Yet, to make the business a success, they must make effective and throughough decisions, using up-to-date information (Hansen, 1995). As John Naisbitt pointed out on the first page of his best-seller Megatrends, "Although we continue to think we live in an industrial society, we have in fact changed to an economy based on the creation and distribution of information." (Thierauf, 1987). This "megashift" as defined by Naisbitt is "an explosive transformation from an industrial to an information society." (Thierauf, 1987). This shift is affecting all companies around the world, and especially in the United States. Therefore, to help problem-solving issues in business, the corporate planning should actually be focusing on problem finding: "future information in the form of problems and related opportunities should be evaluated and resolved in the present as it affects the business organization tomorrow." (Thierauf, 1987). What are some things that the business can do to help make this change and thus solve this problem' Two items need to taken into consideration when analyzing this issue and solving the information overload problem affecting many businesses. First, a change in environmental factors would help contribute to the defeat of the problem(Mitchell, 1954). Corporate planning is at the center of a business organization's decision making process and therefore the corporate planners contribute to the business' future on an almost daily basis(Hansen, 1995). Therefore, the organization needs to coordinate its notion with the outside business world. This means that the business needs to take a close look at the markets and always keep the information about the markets in mind when making decisions. This means taking a close look at how: "the organization operates, current knowledge of its customers and competitors, availability of capital, capabilities of available personnel, and sources of supply . Increasing prices of purchased materials, rising labor costs, and foreign competition signal the need for some type of management information system (MIS) that describes the organization's economic environment and coordinates the external environment with the internal factors to provide corporate planning information." (Thierauf, 1987). The next important item that can assist the business with this problem solving issue is to change internal environmental factors as well. The business needs to address changes that are happening and will happen in the future, and that are affecting the entire business world. Today, this revolves increasingly around technology, as businesses are expected to stay on the cutting edge of technology and technological trends. For most organizations, the hope of making an initial investment in technology creates the hopeful end result of saving money. The 31-year-old unmarried Vikram worked twice as hard in his job to make up for the time he took off for medical reasons. The promotion was a justified reward for his hard work. But the question bothering Vikram, the issue that would determine his decision whether to accept the posting, was: Will I find a Thalassemia care center in Montreal? It was not the first time this unique blood disorder was the deciding factor for the choices Vikram made. â€Å"Thalassemia makes all the decisions for me,† he said. At nine months, Vikram was diagnosed with Thalassemia, a genetic non-communicable blood disorder. Born and raised in India, he spent his early years in and out of hospitals. His parents moved to Canada but Vikram had to stay back with his grandparents because his parents could not cope with earning a living and paying his medical bills. â€Å"After my grandparents passed away, I struggled with the costs and poor facilities for Thalassemia care in Delhi before deciding to move to Canada,† said Vikram, who shifted to Toronto when he was in his twenties. He has needed consistent and frequent blood transfusions, ranging from one unit (or bag) of blood every two months to one unit every seven days. Currently, he needs three units of blood every four weeks. Vikram explained that he visits a clinic for the transfusion. Here, a pump pushes blood into his veins at a constant speed. Each unit takes about two hours to be transfused which means Vikram must spend from six to eight hours in the clinic. This transfusion gives his blood an iron overload. Vikarm then has to take iron chelation (kee-LAY-shun) which involves infusions of the drug Desferal to remove excessive iron from his blood and organs for five full days. The Desferal infusion, he added, is more painful. He has a portocathetor, which is a device under his skin in his chest. This is connected to a needle which is attached to a syringe pump every Monday to infuse the drug continuously for five days. It is perfectly normal for him to show some anger to his parents but after some time he should’ve forgive them. It is wrong to judge people for the t hings they’ve done in the past. Everyone needs a second chance and therefore everyone deserves to be forgiven. You can’t change the past by escaping into the wilderness, but you may change your relationship with people by forgiving them.And forgiving just doesn’t cause any harm to you, but escaping into the wilderness may. Into the Wild Although Chris McCandless’s life ended abruptly, he successfully found meaning in himself and confirmed his belief in the value of living to the fullest when he listened to his inner self as he survived in the Alaskan wild. Into the Wild by Jon Krakaur tells the story of Chris’s bold decision to separate himself from society. He had a good life going for him, but yet McCandless felt as if he wasn’t really living. He said, â€Å"If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy†(89). In order for him to develop life’s true value, he felt as though needed to get away, despite what everyone else thought. He proved his long journey successful through his pleasure at the end, fulfilled by its life changing effect on him. He had completed his emotional journey of finding himself and arranged to return to society, before the surprise of his unexpected downfall. He proclaims, â€Å"I am reborn. This is my dawn. Real life has just begun†(168). McCandless had learned contentment and gained the will to go back to his old environment with a new perspective. His independence and stronghold on life proves the importance of self-realization and knowing oneself, showing the reader that every person has his own aspirations and needs they need to fulfill. Later on, when Chris realizes he has no more hope of living, he writes yet an inspiring and gratifying tribute. He said, â€Å"I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all! †(199). Chris was a real-life example of a person’s morals being pursued and put into action. He shows readers the importance of self-realization and identity, even if others aren’t accepting. One should set standards for himself, and not let others influence them.
